Synopsis

The Butterfield's is a fictional historic novel about the Fisher Lad's cruel 7 year apprenticeship scheme that existed in the British Fishing Industry in the second half of the 19th Century. The story leads you into the fight by the Butterfield family to get the Maritime Act changed so that the life of the apprentices is made better. It describes how polluted the Thames was. Why the whole of the British fishing fleet left Barking for the East Coast ports particularly Grimsby. Child abuse, murder, love and family life at the time are well described and will draw you in. Find out what happens to Charles Jones, an orphan, when he is taken on as an apprentice by the Butterfield's. The story ends in the 1860's but is completed by the Diary of Ann Kime which sees the change of the Maritime Act and the establishment of the Butterfield's in Grimsby. Someone tries to murder her.

À propos de l'auteur

The Butterfield's was written by Michael Stephen Harrison after completing the genealogy of Marie Louise Harrison, his wife and her mother namely Eva Valentine Howlett ne Butterfield. It was clear after visiting the Valens Museum in Dagenham that there was a "ripping god yarn" to be told. This is Michaels first book. Though he has written Technical Manuals as the Managing Director of Harrison Dataphone Limited this is his first novel. Most of the people written about did exist but the story and character assigned to them are purely fiction. The fishing smack Ann Goodman was really a smack called Alfred. She was wreck in 1886 off Saltfleet in Lincolnshire. In 2014 the summer storms removed thousand of tons of sand from the Lincolnshire coast. This revealed two smacks at low tide. One of these is the Alfred. See Google Eart
