Synopsis

The Camera and the Brain follows two photons on their different paths: One flies through the lens of a camera onto a photographic sensor, and is transformed into a part of a photograph. The other one flies through the lens of a human eye, onto the retina, to be converted into a human percept. I discuss the perception of motion, scale and color, the constant scanning movements of our eyes called saccades, and the recognition of objects like faces. I also explain the fundamental difference between perceiving and photographing. The book is illustrated with my own photographs and illustrations by Anna Farrell.

À propos de l'auteur

Klaus M Stiefel was born in Austria in 1972 and grew up near the enormously art-rich city of Vienna. He studied biology at the University of Vienna, graduating in 1998. Afterwards, he moved to Frankfurt, Germany, to get his doctorate at the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research. There, Klaus specialized in the study of individual nerve cells of the vertebrate visual system. What followed were research stints at the Salk Institute in San Diego, in Okinawa, Japan, and in Sydney, Australia. In 2014 Klaus moved to the Philippines and is now an author, photographer, scuba instructor and independent scientist.
