But the Raj's institutions—from law courts to railway lines—were designed to protect British power without benefiting the people they ruled. This self-serving and careless governance resulted in an impoverished people and a stifled society, not a glorious Indian empire.

Jon Wilson is a historian of empire and its aftermath, in South Asia and beyond. He studied at Oxford University and the New School for Social Research and taught at King’s College London for twenty-five years. He is dean of the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at Nanyang Technological University, and author of Out of Chaos. He lives in Singapore.
