Born in Dublin, Ireland, James Joyce (1882–1941) was a novelist, short-story writer, and poet, best known for his novels Ulysses, Finnegans Wake, and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, as well as his short story collection, Dubliners. Though he and his wife spent their lives abroad, Joyce chose to focus his fiction on his birthplace, believing that if he could “get to the heart of Dublin,” he could “get to the heart of all the cities of the world.” An inspiration to a diverse range of authors―among them, Samuel Beckett, John Steinbeck, and Salman Rushdie―Joyce is considered one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century.
