A young governess arrives at Bly, a country home in Essex, England, to care for Miles and Flora, two precocious and pure children. But as ghostly visions take shape, the obsessively protective governess soon fears for the safety of her wards―only to wonder if these hauntings are a conjuring of her own imagination.
In challenging what we see―and what we believe we see―in the dark of the night, The Turn of the Screw stands as one of the boldest and most chilling ghost stories ever told.

Born in New York City, Henry James (1843–1916) was a playwright, travel essayist, and literary critic, and the author of a voluminous number of fictional works.
A Harvard graduate, James abandoned a career in law to pursue his love of literature and writing. His imaginative use of point-of-view narratives, interior monologues, and unreliable narrators would inform one his best-known works, The Turn of the Screw. James, a three-time nominee for the Nobel Prize in Literature, is considered one of the key figures of nineteenth-century literary realism. His other notable works include The Portrait of a Lady, The Bostonians, Daisy Miller, The Wings of the Dove, and Washington Square.
