On 3 May 1995, a team of maritime investigatorsunder the direction of novelist Clive Cussler made aremarkable discovery four nautical miles (7.4 km) offthe coast of Charleston, South Carolina: the wreck ofthe Confederate submarine H. L. Hunley, lost without atrace since the night of 17 February 1864, shortly afterit exploded a torpedo filled with black powder underneathUSS Housatonic, sending that ship to the bottomwithin minutes. This event marked the first time asubmarine sank an enemy ship and at once exemplifiedboth the promise and the risks of underwater warfare. The discovery culminated many years of searchby the team, and many others, over 130 years sinceHunley s loss (Chapter 4). News of the Civil War find wascelebrated by many who had long wondered why thesmall underwater craft never made it home that fatefulnight, as well as by those who had a keen interest inthe maritime history and technological developmentsof the 19th century. It was also a double-edged sword:by locating the site, opportunities for scholarship andpublic education were opened up, but so were avenuesfor illicit looting or well-intentioned but ill-plannedrecovery attempts that would destroy the site andpossibly the boat itself.
