Most of the advice we hear and read seems like it was designed for a seven year-old. How often do we hear a basketball coach telling a kid that the team simply needs to score more, or a teacher asserting that a student needs to focus? These are worthy goals; how to reach these goals, sadly, is rarely discussed. This book will do the opposite. Much of what is written here is designed to help college students (principally those focused on the liberal arts/humanities) learn how to make the most of their four (or more) years of undergraduate education. If I do my job, every reader will learn how to determine what they really like to do, what they’re good at doing, and how those two things translate to a job they want to do. Asked to discuss their future, college students invariably give one of the following three responses: 1. I’m lost. I have no idea what I want to do when I graduate. 2. Everyone tells me to find my passion. How am I supposed to do that? 3. I know what I want to do, but I don’t know how to make it happen. 173 Pages Every College Student Must Read will help students answer these and many other questions, leading them to feel confident and excited about their post-college life.

In 2015, Randy Shain founded One on One Mentors, LLC, an organization devoted to mentoring college students to help them maximize and monetize their collegiate experience. Currently mentoring more than 20 students on topics ranging from selecting a major to defining a career path to hard skills like interviewing, securing internships and jobs as well as on-the-job advice, Mr. Shain is transforming the way students plan for their post-college future. Mr. Shain frequently guest lectures at colleges ranging from Rutgers Business School to Binghamton School of Management and Mercy College Business Honors Program. Mr. Shain additionally is or has been an advisor to a number of small to medium-sized businesses, including a PR/communications firm, a rapidly growing real estate investment firm, a specialty electronics/guitar company, a baseball facility and a now $4 million research entity. Knowing how to ask appropriate, probing questions enables Mr. Shain to elicit information that often points to problems and potential solutions that were not at all those initially being discussed. Mr. Shain co-founded BackTrack Reports, Inc. (nka First Advantage Backtrack Reports), an investigative due diligence firm specializing in examining hedge funds and their executives, in 1993. He and his partner sold the company in 2004 to First Advantage, an investigative firm roll-up then traded on NASDAQ. Mr. Shain stayed on as head of BackTrack, which he helped grow into a company with more than 70-plus employees. Prior to launching BackTrack, Shain held various roles at Bishop Services - a more than 100-year-old investigative firm. He began his career there upon graduating from college in 1987 and remained until late 1993. With his future partner, he helped transform the firm’s investigative process and was quickly promoted to the leadership position of vice president, in charge of operations. Mr. Shain is also the author of the widely-acclaimed book Hedge Fund Due Diligence, Professional Tools to Investigate Hedge Fund Managers. Mr. Shain earned his bachelor’s in marketing with honors from Rutgers University in 1987, and was a member of the inaugural graduating class of the Rutgers Business School.
