The British Army National Service call-up was an extension of the WWII conscription, and lasted from 1946 to 1963. Nearly 2,000,000 young men, aged from 18 – 21 served, mainly in the army. Not everyone was required to serve, for example Northern Irish, Gipsies and the racing community. Liverpool Irish and the Glasgow gang members were not required, due to the social problems of the time. Unfortunately, not being in any of these categories, two years of my life were given over to National Service, which many people were of the opinion, was a waste of time. And so it was with much trepidation that I opened my call-up papers…
