TITLE: A Beginner’s Guide: Crafting a Treasure Coast Classic Ship-in-Bottle explores three key ‘educational’ objectives as set forth in its title construction: ‘A BEGINNER’S GUIDE’ – First, this book is designed specifically to be a ‘beginner’s primer’ to a heritage craft. It is intended to introduce novice crafters, (young and old) to an inexpensive, enjoyable, and highly rewarding hobby that offers an ‘active’ alternative to sedentary hours of computer based social banter. It provides an excellent resource for civic organizations (Boy Scouts/Girl Scouts/Senior Citizens/Disabled American Heroes) seeking to adopt a heritage craft as a healthy and productive way to embrace our history, encourage learning, and promote member creativity. ‘TREASURE COAST CLASSIC’ - Foremost, (by way of its Treasure Coast IQ challenge quiz, and Project Gallery historical ship summaries), this book introduces a reader to the unique nautical lore of the Treasure Coast. It focuses on two important Treasure Coast aspects: Ship Building and Ship Wrecks, (all done under glass). Given its rich maritime history, a book that deals with historic ships, their builders, their captains, and shipwrecks along the Florida Atlantic Coast becomes very much a part of the Florida Treasure Coast experience. ‘SHIP-IN-BOTTLE’ - Finally and most importantly, it strives to take the mystery out of the maritime craft of ship-in-bottle building by providing detailed step by step procedures, and a sequential process pictorial to guide a reader to success. When all goes as planned, a reader will produce a ship-in-bottle of a classic Keys Topsail Schooner, a handmade memory of the Treasure Coast.

Hi, I’m Larry, I wrote this guide on Crafting a Treasure Coast Classic Ship-in-Bottle. My wife Jan and I live in central Florida, glad to meet you. I’m a graduate of the University of New Haven with a degree in Operations Management and am (OK, was) a Certified Safety Professional (Cert. # 5085). In ‘Part A’ of my ‘working’ life, I spent 33 years in the commercial insurance industry guiding clients in the reduction of occupational accidents and injury costs. Shortly after being acquired by a competitor, I was fired for non-performance. The fact that I was just about to turn 55 (protected), was high paid (according to their math), and knew more than my new boss (which really threatened him), had nothing to do with it…I’m sure. In ‘Part B’, I started my own Operational Excellence Consultancy, spent the next 15 years serving clients on five continents, published thirty feature articles on occupational safety and authored a book: “A Universal Model for Safety X-cellence’, which was recognized by the US Department of Defense as a Risk Management ‘Best Practice’. ‘Life after work’ started in 2010 when we moved to Colington Island on the Outer Banks, and pursued (full time) the joy of creating Outer Banks style canvas decoys, crafting nautical items, carving driftwood birds and fish, and building Ships-in Bottles. Currently, we operate Ghost Coast Legends an artesian workshop that creates nautical crafts, historical Ships-in-Bottles for educational display, Flagships-in-Bottles for nautical themed commercial enterprises, and Pride of Ownership Ships-in-Bottles for private boat owners. My Danish (Viking) heritage, I’m sure, has drawn me to the sea and this nautical craft. We’ve successfully achieved our life goal of living a 24/7/365 Margarita lifestyle spending summers on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, winters in Lake County, Florida, and spring vacations on Cape Cod … Cheers!
