It is easy to lead others and manage yourself when things are going well. However, when you encounter ethical or moral dilemmas, you go through a leadership crucible where you are forced to come to grips with your values and their impact on others. A values based leader is not necessarily a role, but the way a person behaves. The cornerstones of values based leadership-honesty, integrity, compassion, diversity, and social responsibility-define who you are as a person. ~from the Foreword by General H. Hugh Shelton, USA (RET) General Shelton’s nationally recognized five cornerstones of values-based leadership apply to all of us, whether K-12 students, undergraduate or graduate students, early career professionals, mid-career leaders, and senior executives. This book is packed with real-life stories by everyday people who exemplified General Shelton’s five cornerstones of values based leadership: • Honesty: Telling the truth, even when it comes at great personal risk. • Integrity: Doing what you say you will do and demonstrating your values on a daily basis. • Compassion: Upholding your standards while offering empathy for those who struggle. • Diversity: Ensuring you get diversity of thought, experience, and backgrounds to bring together for positive results. • Social Responsibility: Focusing on a purpose greater than yourself. These stories from everyday values based leaders are told in their own words. They don’t come with exalted titles. Instead, you’ll see how these every day values based leaders apply these five cornerstones when making hard decisions. These stories give us all inspiration that making the difficult decisions pays off, using honesty, integrity, diversity, compassion, and social responsibility. All proceeds from the sale of this book go directly to the NC State University Shelton Leadership Center to help provide student scholarships for the Shelton Youth Challenge
