Synopsis

Bernie Sanders made "socialism" a good word. What is socialism? ~~~ Has there ever been a socialist movement in the U.S.? Has there been "socialism in America"? How does socialism tie together militarism, racism, environmental crimes and the Wall Street banksters? ~~~ This book, by attorney, college teacher and author Jerry Cunningham, explains recent U.S. history from a socialist standpoint, and sets forth practical steps necessary for carrying Bernie's vision to the next level.Contents (220 pages) ~~~I. Introduction |II. What’s Wrong With Capitalism, Anyway? |III. The Environment |IV. Latin America Fights Back |V. Cages For All: The Victory Of The Punishers |VI. National Liberation After World War II |VII. The House of Islam Fights Back |VIII. Poisonous Ideologies: The Loss Of Privacy |IX. They Like, We Like |X. Socialists To Know And Love |From the book:The socialists, strong before World War I in Europe, were run over by the flood of nationalism that gripped the people during World War I in Europe and elsewhere. ~~~ After the war, the left settled into strong political parties, and scurried for votes. ~~~ The socialist view of environmentalism is this: we applaud every effort that signals a retreat of the rich countries from over-consumption, the unintentional sin against the planet of the plain folks in today’s capitalist homelands. We will go further than liberals when it comes to oil companies – oil companies must be tamed, and the best way to do that is to nationalize them in the U.S. and the U.K. We believe that the best place for oil and coal is in the bowels of the earth.~~~~~~Socialists stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Green parties the world over.~~~~~~ Socialists, in the U.S., need to focus on local politics, from dog-catcher to mayor, and from school board to city council as we head towards 2050, when, to help you, there will be an additional 2bn humans. ~~~~~~ It is the socialist view that anyone in jail or prison tonight solely on a drug possession charge is a political prisoner ~~~~~~ One easy method – a socialist dream – is to abolish the NSA and the CIA. ~~~~~~ Are socialists against unbridled capitalism? Yes. Do we condemn its results? Yes. Do we seek to overthrow all businesses? Every pizza shop? No. ~~~~~~ Do socialists seek to end the legal system? No. It’s strong and respected, except for the ‘criminal justice’ sector. Do we seek to destroy private property, like home ownership? No: we want you to die owning your home, instead of dying with debt (25% of Americans today die with a negative net worth). ~~~~~~ For socialists, our first law is: worship mankind’s dignity. ~~~~~~ The Nazi State’s main goal was the destruction of socialism and communism. ~~~~~~ After socialism takes root in America, the Army, the Navy, the Air Force and the Marines will be smaller, and strong and respected in the U.S., as they are now. And they will be respected by the world, a respect which, because of capitalism’s quest for intergalactic domination, and the militarists above them, they now lack. ~~~~~~ Fascists thought, correctly, that democracy leads to socialism. ~~~~~~ Eugene Debs on workers under socialism: “He will be the monarch of his work.” ~~~~~~President Harry Truman (1884-1972), no socialist, said: “Socialism is a scareword they have hurled at every advance the people have made in the last 20 years. Socialism is what they called public power. Socialism is what they called social security. Socialism is what they called farm price supports. Socialism is what they called bank deposit insurance. Socialism is what they called the growth of free and independent labor organizations. Socialism is their name for almost anything that helps all the people.” ~~~
