Floyd DeBurger may not be an accomplished writer, but he has a compelling story to tell. He got married at the young age of 15. He quit school and struggled to make a living for himself and his young bride who was only 14. When he turned 17, he joined the Air Force and started a new life. The Air Force put distance between him and his gang friends and his life of petty crime. While Floyd was in the Air Force, he and his high school sweetheart, Carol, had two beautiful daughters and for the first time he had a real family of his own. He became a self-made man owning a variety of successful and not-so successful businesses during his lifetime. At the age of 55, he had a heart attack and triple-bypass surgery, and by the time he turned 58 the work-alcoholic had to retire due to his health problems. Studies show that children of abuse may not acknowledge these deep-seated emotions until they surface many years later in life. This is how it happened for Floyd when at age sixty-one he started waking up in the middle of the night remembering events from his childhood. He was startled by these vivid memories and was more perplexed about what to do with them. So even though he knew darned little about writing he felt compelled to grab a spiral notebook and start writing down his story. His second wife, a school librarian, awoke to see him writing and crying in the middle of the night. She was more surprised than anyone to see him pouring out his heart on paper. He still cannot talk much about his experiences, but he can write about them, and his wife is his spokesman. He hopes this book will inspire other victims of child abuse to find a way to tell their story and release their years of suppressed emotions. Floyd has finally faced his past by letting his damaged inner child speak through his memoir, which has taken him over 18 years to write.
