Synopsis

MATHadazzles Reasoning Algebraically with Decimals are intriguing number puzzles that challenge solvers’ logical reasoning and problem solving talents, and put to use their knowledge of familiar and not-so-familiar numbers, symbols, and mathematical operations. A MATHadazzle puzzle is a 3-by-3 grid with circles at the ends of the rows and the columns. Some grid cells have clues, given as equations or inequalities, that “describe” the values of n that will fill those cells. The solver’s job is to use clues to place the decimal numbers, -2.0, -1.5, -1.0, -0.5, +0.5, +1.0, +1.5, +2.0, and +2.5 in the nine cells of the grid so that the numbers add up to the given sums. While solving MATHadazzles you will learn about various types of numbers and computations with them. All are defined at the front of the book. Answers are at the back of the book. MATHadazzles are arranged in order by level of difficulty from fairly easy to super challenging. Contributors to the book were high school students who participated in the NSF-funded App Maker Pro project (#1509105) at Arizona State University. They wrote, edited, and rewrote MATHadzzles for you to enjoy. Take the book everywhere you go. It fits easily into a pocket, a backpack, and a shoulder or hand bag. Carole Greenes is Director of the Practice Research and Innovation in Mathematics Education Center, and Professor of Math Education at Arizona State University. She is Principal Investigator for the NSF project App Maker Pro (AMP), the Georgia Tech Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) program, and co-director of the 8-Volume MATHadazzle Puzzle Books series. She has authored more than 300 books and programs, 75 articles, 5 math musicals, and 2 musical histories of mathematics. She is editor of the AATM journal, OnCore, and author of the on-line open-source monthly MATHgazine Junior (grades 4 – 8) and Senior (grades 8 – 12). She is a board member of the Advisory Council STEM AZ, the Museum of Mathematics in NYC, Math Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools, and the ASU Preparatory Academies. She is past president of the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics. In 2003, she was inducted into the Massachusetts Mathematics Educators Hall of Fame, received the Ross Taylor/Glen Gilbert National Leadership Award in Math Education from the NCSM in 2011, and was awarded the Copper Apple Award for Leadership in Mathematics in Arizona in 2016. In her free time she likes to write math stories and solve crossword puzzles. Mary Cavanagh is a mathematics educator always drawn to games, brain teasers, cards, and magic. Dr. Cavanagh is Executive Director of the Practice, Research and Innovation in Mathematics Education (PRIME) Center and Research Assistant Professor in Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University and author of numerous books, including mathematics textbooks programs; math activity books; games; articles; and science activities for K-8 students and their families including EnVisionMATH™, Grades K-6; Exploring Mathematics, Grades K-8; Math, Science, and Beyond Grades K-6; Zap, Twang, Buzz; Algebra Readiness Made Easy, Grades K-7; Math to Know; and Math to Learn. She has taught all of the elementary grades as a classroom teacher and as a mathematics specialist and has conducted math workshops for teachers throughout the United States, Australia, Germany and Okinawa. Although most of her bets are limited to 25¢, she loves poker. In her ballroom dancing activities, she finds mathematics applications in terms of combinations of turns, angles, and symmetry. She has used some of her science and magic for introductions and conclusions to dance routines. Her work on collections of puzzlers like Mathadazzles is always a joy.
