‘I always consider the settlement of America with reverence and wonder, as the opening of a grand scene and design in providence.’ – John Adams
John Adams lived until 1826 when America was fifty years old. There was much settlement after his lifetime. In the 1880s there was still some frontier. (It would be declared closed in 1890 by the superintendent of the U.S. Census.) Could Adams have looked in upon his country sixty years after his death, he might have still sensed the hand of providence.
The story...
John and Barth Farrington have grown up on a farm in the Minnesota River valley. As the older brother, John is to inherit the farm. Having seen too many years of crop failures, he despairs of his inheritance and joins the army, content to let his younger brother have what was to have been his. Barth devotes himself to the family enterprise and fortune smiles upon it under his care. The next few years are prosperous ones. Disillusioned with the army, John looks back with longing to what he forsook. He wants his birthright back, to the delight of his parents and the resentment of his brother. John’s new wife, Amanda, is caught up in the conflict between the brothers. Her happiness is pivotal to the outcome of the story.
