Synopsis

Lizzie's Letters is a collection of 235 letters exchanged among the family and friends of Harrison Grey Otis "HGO" and Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Snell) Wales of Knox County, Illinois, before, during and after the Civil War. The book comprises transcriptions of all the letters, color photos of a sampling of the letters and substantial background information, genealogical data and military records of the participants. HGO and Lizzie were pioneers in Illinois, having immigrated from New England and Ohio. Both were sixth to eighth generation descendants of mostly British immigrants to New England. They bore eight children between 1840 and 1862, one of whom died young and three of whom ultimately volunteered to fight in Illinois units of the Union Army. The father, HGO, also joined the fighting. The letters in the collection start with correspondence among HGO and his friends in Massachusetts as he explored the "far west" areas of Illinois for career opportunities. He purchased land for farming and met a young lady, Lizzie Snell, whose parents had moved their family from Ohio and purchased farm land nearby. They married, had children, travelled back to New England to visit relatives for almost two years and returned to Knox County to farm and raise their family. When the Civil War began, the eldest son, Otis, immediately enlisted in the Union Army. As the War continued, the second son, Edwin, and then the father, HGO, joined the fight. As the War entered the third year, the third son, Henry, enlisted at age 15. Reading these letters is analogous to popping in and out of a room where you might get to hear parts of one side of a phone conversation. Clearly, only a small fraction of the correspondence during this three decade period was preserved but one can form a skeletal mental picture of the lives of this Wales family The rest of the story will be learned by readers of the letters. It is presumed that Lizzie was responsible for saving and preserving the letters finally inherited by several great-great-grandchildren. Thus the title of the book.

À propos de l'auteur

Glenn Selch is a great-great-grandson of HGO & Lizzie Wales. He grew up in Colorado enjoying frequent visits to the ranches which evolved from HGO's homestead and are still operated by cousins. After earning a degree in chemical engineering and serving as a junior officer in the US Army, he experienced an over 55 year career as a chemical engineer in several capacities. His favorite avocation during the past 35 years has been genealogy. A sizable database of ancestors and cousins has been built while searching for as many as can be found of his immigrant ancestors. In 2007 he published Our Ancestors, which identifies 157 immigrant ancestors and many others. He is currently working on Volume 2, which will identify over 100 addition immigrants and many more ancestors and cousins. Glenn's mother and two great-aunts were also amateur genealogists and had handed down the two small cloth bags containing 200 letters written during the civil war among his mother's ancestors. With assistance from several cousins and discovery of more letters, this book was assembled over a period of over two decades.
