The STORYTELLER: Alfred "Buddy Boy" Valdez was born in Port Huron, Michigan. While living in Port Huron until the age of 12, he enjoyed cub scouts, boy scouts, and playing hockey. When he moved to Houston, Texas, Alfred continued to enjoy playing basketball and worked in a hardware store/lumber yard. At 16 years of age, he began working at a flying school washing small airplanes at Hobby Airport, and he was paid in flying lessons. During his summer months in college, he was able to work on ships as a merchant seaman, and his life as a sailor allowed him to travel to various foreign "ports of call." Alfred received several college degrees including a law degree in 1984. In 2014, he obtained an "honorary degree" in storytelling from "Campfire University." Most of his "professors" were under the age of 12 years old. THE ILLUSTRATOR: Elena Borisova is a professional artist and designer. She started to illustrate book stories in her early childhood in St. Petersburg, Russia, where she was raised. Upon graduating from the St. Petersburg Academy of Art and Design, Elena pursued a career in Architecture and Industrial Design. Shortly after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, Elena and her family immigrated to the United States. With Houston, Texas, as her new home, Elena continued to hone her professional craft in commercial architecture whilst simultaneously pursuing her passion of painting and free hand illustration on the side. Elena is excited to work with Alfred Valdez on the Tago project and the opportunity to deliver a positive message of friendship and kindness to children.
