Synopsis

The purpose of this book is to help teachers recognize and manage young children who may have ASD. Frequently, teachers are the first to recognize that a child’s development is different from that of other children. They suspect that something may be wrong but are not sure about how to proceed. Parts 1 and 2 of this book provide guidance in recognizing a developmental disorder. Part 3 contains information regarding the all-important task of how to speak with parents about the concerns that the teacher has. Part 4 provides advice on how to manage the child within the regular classroom. Part 5 provides information concerning what specialists do and what they can offer to children with ASD. This book is intended for all teachers of young children, whether in early years school programs or in preschool and nursery programs. It has been designed particularly for those teachers working in situations (such as international schools) where they may not have access to a range of experts who can assess and diagnose developmental disorders.

À propos de l'auteur

Dr. Webster was born and educated in Great Britain. After training as a teacher, she emigrated to Canada and holds a B.Ed., M.A., and Ed.D in Educational Psychology (Human Learning, Development and Instruction from the University of British Columbia. She taught in the public school system for 10 years as a regular and special educator. After receiving her doctoral degree in 1982, she taught undergraduate and graduate students in the Faculty of Education at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario and the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. Dr. Webster has lived in the Yukon since 1989, where for 6 years she was Director of Special Programs with the Department of Education. Dr. Webster's additional cross-cultural experience includes work in the Eastern Arctic, Northern BC, the West Indies, Africa and Southeast Asia, where for many years she consulted with International schools.
