Synopsis

Alene Delaney Simmons was born in 1921. She is the fifth of eleven children born to sharecroppers Leon (Lee) and Everline Buckingham Delaney. Leon was the son of George Delaney, who was the son of Matilda Talbert Delaney Perkins, who was the daughter of a slave and the Talbert plantation owner, James Leroy Talbert. The Talbert plantation resided in what is now considered the Keatchie mail route in Desoto Parish, Louisiana which is at the tip of Panola County, Texas, and Caddo Parish, Louisiana.In this memoir, Alene shares reflections of her life that covers periods of time including the Great Depression, World War II and Civil Rights.You will learn of her childhood shenanigans; how she met her husband; her children s gifts, as well as, how important her faith in Jesus Christ has kept her throughout good days and bad days.These are her reflections in her own words.

Verna R. Jacobs is the oldest grandchild of Alene Delaney Simmons. Having the privilege to know and grow up with all four of her grandparents, Verna knows first-hand the depth and levels of wisdom, knowledge, and understanding that can be gleaned from elders. These principles has afforded her with a rich heritage which has been the driving force in creating this memoir for her grandmother – who at the time is 96 years old. It is Verna’s desire that this book show love, honor and respect to her grandmother while also serving as a tangible response of gratitude and appreciation. Verna encourages others to have the necessary conversations with their elders, and pursue documenting their stories to extend their legacies and produce a gift that keeps on giving.
