Synopsis

Both children and adults will laugh and learn while reading the illustrated adventures of Tufty as he tackles the problem of his crossed-eyes. Tufted titmice hold seeds between their toes and peck the shells off so they can eat the tasty insides. Tufty's crossed eyes make it difficult for him to see where he is pecking. Poor Tufty pecks his toes instead of the seeds. Mother Titmouse's songbird friends suggest protecting his toes with boots or sneakers but this just causes more problems for Tufty. Since he can’t protect his toes while eating seeds he tries to eat the earthworms, moths and other things that his bird friends eat. This causes Tufty even more problems! All of Tufty's difficulties are finally solved with help from Plato the owl and Mr. Crow. Tufty's experiences illustrate interesting facts about songbirds, positive social values and offer teaching opportunities for adults reading to children.

Rev. Joe Jenney, an Episcopal priest, learned to admire story telling while living in East Tennessee and to draw and write after retiring from the aerospace industry. His retirement home is in the woods by a lake where he enjoys watching the songbirds that frequent his garden. He has access to a large book collection and is intrigued by the old children's books, many with hand painted illustrations. The story of Tufty the Cross-eyed Titmouse combines his love of birds, drawing and story telling.
