John Godolphin Bennett (1897-1974) was a British mathematician, technologist, linguist and spiritual teacher. Bennett turned down a full scholarship to Oxford, instead taking a commission in the Royal Engineers, posted to France in the last two years of the First World War. Bennett survived a serious injury and after the end of the war, was posted to Istanbul Turkey, where he rose to become the head of British Military Intelligence, with the entire Middle East as his territory. In 1921, he resigned from the Army, and began a period as a financial adventurer attempting to secure the fortunes of the heirs to the Turkish Sultan. When this enterprise failed, Bennett reinvented himself in the fuel industry, and quickly established a formidable reputation as a director of research in the coal industry, in which he worked continuously between 1930 and 1950. During the period he was in contact first with P.D. Ouspensky, and in 1948, re-established contact with G.I. Gurdjieff, whom he had known in Turkey and France. A gifted linguist, Bennett travelled widely in Asia, Australia and North America Today. Bennett is known as a leading exponent of the work of his teacher G.I. Gurdjieff. At the time of his death, Bennett was the Director of the International Academy for Continuous Education, Gloucestershire UK, a residential school based on the principles of Gurdjieff.
