Synopsis

A View From The Porch is a series of short compositions on my observations and reactions to the world today. These are spontaneous thoughts and they are grouped in no particular order. My purpose in writing this book is to help people feel better about life. It is my hope that my book will motivate and inspire others to find more meaning, hope, and clarity in their own lives.

Ray Matlock Smythe received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington. He received his Master of Arts degree in Teaching from Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon. Mr. Smythe taught American history for 39 years in middle and high school in Washington, Oregon, and California. He has earned many accolades during this career. The four awards that were most meaningful to him were: being named the 1985 finalist for the Oregon State Teacher of the Year, being chosen as the 1987 Portland Trailblazers Educator of the Year, being honored as the 2000-2001 Teacher of the Year at David Douglas High School, and having the Marywood Palm Valley School 2009 Yearbook dedicated to him the year he retired. Ray lives with his partner Steve and their two dogs in Cathedral City, California. Mr. Smythe may be reached at Rayme49@aol.com.
