Synopsis

The issue of homosexuality and same-sex marriage is here to stay in the United States. Even though it is currently the law of the land, how can Christians live as citizens of the land and stay true to the Scriptures? To do so is to face condemnation and the charge that Christians are inconsistent in their appeal to the Bible in general and the Old Testament in particular to argue against homosexuality. What about all the Old Testament laws we do not follow? If homosexuality is wrong because the Old Testament says it is wrong, should we not also avoid polyester and shellfish? Should we not also kill people with stones for breaking those rules? Is there a way for a Christian to respond thoughtfully and accurately to these familiar charges of inconsistency and special pleading? Responding adequately to these charges will reveal how inaccurate the argument is and how those making the accusation of theological inconsistency are themselves abusing the Scriptures they do not believe to be authoritative in the first place. Homosexual activists, politicians, and the media are able to press this point successfully only because most of us do not know how Christians are to relate to the Old Testament in general and the Old Testament laws in particular. In this book, we will take a look at each of these cases and discover the charges are shallow and ignorant. We will first gain a biblical understanding of the purpose behind Leviticus and its strange laws. In doing so, we will gain a biblical understanding of how modern New Testament Christians relate to the Old Testament. We must do this because this issue is not going away. The issue of homosexuality, homosexual rights, same-sex marriage, and attacks on the rights of Christians to live according to their faith will only increase in the near future. This is the future of America and we do not have the choice of opting out of the debate.
