In 1945 a Kodak Brownie box camera captured an instant in time when a B&O Railroad steam locomotive raced through Octa, a village in rural Ohio. It is a snapshot of that moment. But time has raced by, leaving few witnesses or a written record to tell the story of how people lived and how kids spent their time there from 1940 through 1953. It was a unique period and a unique setting, as compared with life and conditions in urban areas. This narrative is told within the framework of how the birth of that village in the late-19th century evolved from land grants to Revolutionary War veterans, how transportation made it a hub of commerce for the village and surrounding farming community, and how transportation, electricity, technology and other emerging influences diminished its importance. Transportation may also influence its rebirth. Octa incorporated a major portion of the highway interchange formed by the construction of Interstate 71 and the upgrading of U.S. Route 35 to a four-land highway. Hotels, restaurants and other businesses have been built, and are continuing to being built, in and around the interchange. Octa is adjacent to a retail outlet center and near State of Ohio’s newest and largest certified Job Ready Site for industrial development and distribution. Octa has growing employment opportunities and is uniquely situated for rebirth.
