XML is a common data interchange format for internet based software applications. It is hard to find a professional web application that doesn't use XML in one or the other form. In this context, software engineers need a powerful tool to process XML data. The Scala programming language provides this capability as part of the language suite. In this booklet, first, we discuss XML literals and then show how to extract elements from an XML content. One of the powerful language features provided by Scala is pattern matching, which allows developers to match and extract data. We present complete and fully runnable programs so as to save professionals' time. Next, we discuss serialization and deserialization. These are two very frequently used operations by the developers. Generally, we write programs in a programming language syntax and then convert our data to XML format before data are transmitted. On the receiving end, XML should be converted back to programming language specific format so that data can be processed further. This is all about serialization and deserialization. If we are using Scala as the main programming language, we don't have to look for a separate framework to process XML. Next, we discuss loading and saving XML. These are also two very commonly required operations as we need to save data in a persistent system for long term storage. Obviously the operation should be bi-directional. We present complete examples to demonstrate these capabilities.
