Synopsis

Come and join us on an exploration inspired by a remarkable Tudor map discovered by chance whilst we were researching local history. It shows the common land as it was in 1595 between two towns, Heathfield and Burwash, in the East Sussex High Weald. Read how we took the giant jigsaw piece of the map and attempted to fit it into today's landscape of hedgerows and streams. You will be with us as you view the many photos and maps. Find out what is left behind today of the houses and other features on the map, such as a rare form of beacon used to warn of the Spanish Armada that had been lost in time. Unexpected historical links to Rudyard Kipling, who lived nearby, as well as to a notorious murder in the Bahamas involving the Duke of Windsor and, possibly, organised crime, were found. Some general historical context is also provided in order to give an insight into the lives of the people named on the map who used this common land. We are not academic historians so anyone could replicate the study if they too found a map like this one.............
