Synopsis
Let me say at the outset that this collection of stories has only one purpose: to highlight by contrast the real Jesus and the true good news that he proclaimed. If readers are mildly entertained, so be it, but that is not the main objective. Sometimes we see best by learning what something is not, rather than having the same thing explained to us over and over again. By overexposure, it is possible to get used to Jesus and lose sight of his message, his person, and the hope that he gives. I foresee two main misunderstandings of this work, and so I would like to use this space to try to explain my defense prior to further reading. The first objection is the charge of blasphemy. I do not doubt that some will continue to think the writing that follows to be a defamation of Jesus and a work of grave irreverence even after considering my defense, but I feel that a defense must be given anyway. If I were actually attributing these words and actions to Jesus, then I would agree. Much of the text would be heretical and damnable if I was claiming to have discovered the real Jesus. Thankfully, that is not the case. These stories are written to illustrate who and what Jesus is not! I make no claim here about the real Jesus, only the many unreal versions of him that we have created, mostly unconsciously. The other misunderstanding I foresee is that I condemn each of the pursuits that are expressed as "gospels," as the good news in each of these stories. I am not opposed to science, technology, politics, licit pleasures, theology, philosophy or any other worthwhile and necessary endeavor. Indeed, I highly value these things and often engage personally in study of philosophy, theology, and science. I teach physics and would not do so if I did not truly value it. My study of philosophy has helped me grow immensely. The thing I am opposed to is turning any one of these activities or ideas (or any combination of them) into the good news, into the Gospel that will save humanity and bring true beatitude. The meaning of the title is that these are "gospels" that Jesus did not proclaim because they are not gospels. No one wrote them because they are not the good news to mankind. My greatest hope for this work is that, while reading it, some people may come to the realization that they sometimes act or think as if these things really were the gospel. The reader may recognize his own subconscious attitudes towards Jesus. If that is the case for you, do not fret. Recognizing faulty thinking is the first step to dismissing faulty thinking. To complete this reading, when you have finished the present work, I implore you to go and read the four earliest reports of the real Jesus that we know, the four Gospels contained in the Christian New Testament. After laughing at what he is not, meet him as he truly is. There is no substitute. He himself is our only true hope.
