Synopsis

Change has come Home. In more ways than one. Leader Johnathon Heron erred in ignoring a critical fault just outside the microcosm of Home, and now everyone in the domed-over city suffers for his laxity. The Edge has become a seething cauldron of doubt, fear and mistrust. Ordinary men and women are rising up against what they perceive to be an intentionally caused disaster, forcing Commander Beauchamp and Leader Heron to revisit, revise and implement far more serious measures to keep Home safe from itself. Aloysius Honeymaker, doting father, stern Keeper of Bees, grows quietly enraged as his daughter, Wanda, suffers under the yoke of her imprisonment. The once-smartest man in Home resolves to bring his daughter peace, to give unto her satisfaction. No matter where that decision takes him, no matter the cost. Alexander Stinson has been given his greatest dream. He has become the youngest Peacer in History. Built on a platform of trickery and lies, young Alex works hard to distance himself from that fateful day in Advanced History, but at what cost to family and friends? Will the injuries he sustained saving ungrateful Shery drive a wedge between him and his friend, Rickard Heron, or will he master the darkness spreading quickly through him? Peter Stinson, still 'ward' to The Church, still Scribe to Father Merrick, struggles to understand his role in the world; an unabashed atheist and seemingly incapable of holding his tongue, Peter is finding it difficult to understand precisely what it is that Father Merrick sees in him as well as finding a place within those holy halls amongst the other brothers. Will he discover the proper path to Salvation, or will the pressures of his new lot in life send him in a different direction altogether? Father Merrick never approved of Leader Heron's decision to 'save' Mystery Girl. Never held his tongue about what he believed to be the most likely outcome. As he made his point clear, so to did he decide he'd not allow what's happening below House on Heron Hill, in Lab 45, to go unpunished. The priest made that difficult decision, one that doesn't sit lightly, but must be carried through to it's ultimate conclusion, no matter what that might mean for Home. Or for his old friend, or his son. Commander Beauchamp never wanted any of this, but with The Edge hovering on the brink of war every moment of every day following Night of, he has no choice but to boldly stride down the path illuminated by Leader Heron's Choices. He, too, is bound up in a Destiny not of his own choosing, and he, too, will do whatever it takes to see things through. Leader Johnathon Heron regrets his choices. Nearly all of them, it seems, and is caught in webs of his own creation. He sees the necessity of resolving the situation with Mystery Girl as speedily as possible, yet cannot condone what he views as an unnecessary and needlessly bloody solution to their problem. He forces the teams responsible for digging into how and why a young woman can survive in the New World to adhere to a strictly peaceful process, a choice that will ultimately result in the world of Home being rocked to the very foundation. Rickard Heron never wanted to live in Home. Never. He's always wanted to leave. He WILL leave. No matter what. But ... someone points out to him that down in Lab 45, there resides a source of information about the New World that is beyond anything he could ever hope to uncover once out of Home. And so Rickard Heron decides to take a risk. He decides to see if he can't learn all he can from Mystery Girl. To rid Home of the problem she represents, once he's ready to depart. And through it all, OverEye watches closely, dancing on the fine edges of sanity, struggling to control the unrepentant crush of Destiny that threatens to consume the whole of Home.
