Synopsis

The Checklist tells the story of a mentally ill marketing manager set on revenge. Despite his medical problems, Charles Montgomery has built a successful career during more than two decades in his profession. He changes jobs to accept a position that offers more money, as well as more opportunities to travel. Right away, however, Montgomery notices there is something different about the place where he now works. His manager, company CEO Jerry Lowe, has frequent outbursts and no one at the small company will exchange any words with him. Three weeks into his new position, Montgomery is fired by Lowe for a minor mistake in logging his time. Unable to go back to his previous job, Charles falls into a clinical depression, one that requires hospitalization for two weeks of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT treatments). He emerges from the treatments still battling anxiety and depression. As Charles struggles with mounting bills and college expenses, he determines that Lowe is the cause of his problems and decides on a plan to murder him. Charles talks with God and reasons that he can blame his crime on his mental illness and that he will be forgiven. He begins to follow Lowe and makes plans to kill him. Along the way, he discovers secrets about Lowe and his company. This leads him on a chase up the East Coast after Lowe kidnaps one of Charles’ friends. As Charles becomes more and more determined to track and kill Lowe, he develops a checklist in his mind of others who have wronged him. He becomes convinced that God will forgive him for killing each of his antagonists, which establishes the scenario for a series of novels based on The Checklist.
