Chalmers Chair in Canadian Music. He has published extensively on Canadian music history, served as English style editor for the Encyclopedia of Music in Canada, and has been the official historian of the Women's Musical Club of Toronto since writing this centennial volume. He was commissioned by the club to write the book in preparation for its hundredth anniversary in 1998. Counterpoint to a City was published by ECW Press in 1997 and runs to 249 pages. It chronicles the first hundred years of the Women's Musical Club of Toronto, founded in 1898, and situates that history within the broader social and cultural development of the city. Elliott subsequently produced two supplementary volumes for the club ? Counterpoint Continued in 2008 and Counterpoint Three in 2023 ? but this first volume remains the foundational account. The book's title is deliberately chosen. The Women's Musical Club has functioned, across its long history, as a kind of counterpoint to the official and predominantly male institutions of Toronto's musical establishment ? not in opposition to them, but running alongside, distinct in character and often more adventurous in programming. Founded at a moment when women were actively discouraged from performing music in public ? and when the wives of prominent men risked their husbands' social standing by appearing on stage for pay ? the club provided a means by which musically accomplished women could perform and attend concerts in a context that was socially acceptable precisely because it was private, female, and not commercial. Elliott draws on archival documents, contemporary newspaper reports and reviews, programme notes, and interviews to reconstruct the club's century of activity. The research was conducted largely from microfilm in Robarts Library, predating searchable digital archives, and the meticulousness of the documentation reflects the difficulty of that process. The club's archives are held in the Special Collections of the Toronto Reference Library. The history Elliott tells is not simply an institutional chronicle. Through the club's programmes and membership, the book traces Toronto's evolution as a musical city ? the artists who were engaged, the repertoire that was chosen, the audiences that attended, and the shifting standards of what constituted serious musical culture in English Canada. Among the performers who appeared under the club's auspices over its first century were figures of international stature, and the book records the club's role in bringing significant artists to a Toronto audience that might not otherwise have encountered them. The social history dimension is equally present. The clubwoman movement of the late nineteenth century ? the wave of women's study and cultural clubs that emerged across North America in the post-Confederation decades ? provides the context within which the WMCT was founded, and Elliott is attentive to both the genuine ambitions of the club's founders and the social constraints within which those ambitions had to operate. The University of Toronto Quarterly reviewer noted that reading the club's history is a lesson in Toronto's broader cultural development, and the Canadian Book Review Annual called it a richly documented history of one of Toronto's most distinguished musical organizations.
