Readings for a History of Anthropological Theory is a wide-ranging collection of important writings by anthropologists, sociologists, historians, and other social theorists whose work has been important to the emergence of anthropology as an academic discipline. Throughout the book, editors Paul A. Erickson and Liam D. Murphy ask, "what unifies a discipline of such theoretical and methodological diversity?" Emphasizing tural anthropology, the book is divided into four parts, each of which examines transformations that characterized a partiar period in anthropological thought. Part One features writings by nineteenth-century intellectual forerunners and founders of anthropology, many of whom were concerned to understand the evolution of human society and ture through different phases of progress from "primitive" through "civilized." Part Two looks at the increasing complexity of anthropological thought, as an early twentieth-century generation of professional anthropologists in North America and Europe began to innovate and bring new theoretical insights and research methods to their work. The essays in Part Three focus on the ever-deepening search for new empirical knowledge about primarily non-Western societies, and on the growing diversity of approaches in discipline. Part Four looks at the latter-day crisis of faith in the soundness of anthropological knowledge, and at the strategies that theorists have proposed to overcome a bias that many anthropologists now believe inheres in Western colonialism and global capitalism. By way of framing the readings, Erickson and Murphy contribute an introduction and conclusion, in addition to discussions of each of the four parts. A glossary of unfamiliar terms, study questions, and suggestions for further reading are also included.
