Excerpt from the Preface: The present inquiry is a prolog to the study of ecopolitics, to the study of the political philosophy of relations between human beings and nature, exploring the feasibility of integrating the knowledge of the social and the natural sciences about the interchange between human activities and the cycles of nature. This exercise is also an introduction to the study of a specific type of public policies, those that address issues concerning resource use and the quality of life. In short, this is a study of politics. But it is equally a study of the ecological foundations of political systems. Some may read it also as a detailed analysis of a particular political system: that of a Third World country, Brazil. Others may consider it an assessment of how political systems in general, but especially in the Third World, address environmental issues.
