Living in a land stripped and poisoned by the local industries, the Mohawks of Akwesasne turned to gambling in order to survive. Yet it soon became evident that only certain people were profiting, and the traditional Mohawks began to fear for their values, their safety, and for the future of their children. Violence finally erupted in the spring and summer of 1990, resulting in a virtual war that split the small community into vehement factions. Automatic weapons and nightly firefights led to the massive intervention of both the Canadian and the United States governments. Several men died in the conflict. The media focused on a "Mohawk Civil War," but few papers focused on the true underlying story: that this confrontation was brought about by the dominant white culture that for decades had abused the land of the Mohawks. The traditional Mohawks who live on the reserve asked Bruce Johansen to write an account of the conflict, and they provided him with documents, newspaper accounts, and extensive interviews. His research resulted in this riveting account of land disputes, government disregard for Native rights, pollution that destroyed Native lands, and a people attempting to rebuild the social fabric of their lives.
