This action-packed adventure of ex-cop turned private eye, Joe Copp, takes him into the world of corrupt lawmakers and cops on the take. Copp is hired by an old friend, the current Brighton City Administrator, to get to the bottom of the municipal mess in the Southern California town of Brighton. The mayor has been murdered; the Chief of Police has resigned amid rumors of corruption within his department; and other city officials are being accused of similar allegations. Almost from the moment that Joe Copp takes on the job of Acting Police Chief, it is an icy, downhill slide for Copp. A beautiful police officer tries to set him up on attempted rape charges, and his investigation leads him on a murky trail of murder, sex, drugs and dirty politics. The police badge Copp wears offers little protection against the evil forces of corruption. Milwaukee Sentinel: "Pendleton is a master of action and dialog and 'Copp' is a taut detective story.

Hardcover. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Fine. First Edition. First edition with complete number line beginning with 1. Fine in fine dust jacket, not price clipped, in protective mylar cover. "PI Joe Copp is back for a grim fifth outing in this mystery with a twist. To solve the murder of a Brighton, Calif., mayor, and investigate a corrupt police department. Copp agrees to serve as acting police chief. Working on the inside as a "lightning rod" for trouble, he puts his life in immediate danger when a pair of cops tries to run him over and are themselves shot by Brighton's finest. Other law enforcement officers are soon murdered. A possible link to the killings is a mysterious mansion purportedly built by investor Harold Schwartzman, who may have bought up bars in Brighton's "Helltown." Looking for someone trustworthy, Copp turns to detective Delilah Turner, who seems genuinely worried about the killings, but may also be less than truthful about reasons for her visits to the mansion. A romance ensues, but it is just a punctuation mark in Pendleton's ( Copp for Hire ) gripping story, as more cops and ostensible bystanders are slaughtered. The true identity of the mysterious Schwartzman, the purpose of the mansion, the motive behind the killings and Turner's role in all these events are unveiled in a riveting resolution." -- Publishers Weekly.
