Beginning with a look at how the priesthood was perceived by priests and other in the 50 years before the Second Vatican Council, Fogarty points to the changes that have occurred in the priest's way of life and his present understanding of God, Jesus and the Church. His findings point out a variety of areas of challenge and stress for priests today.

Fr. John C. Fogarty, a native of Boston, ordained a Carmelite priest in 1950, has taught in the Carmelite seminary, served as Prior of Crespi Carmelite Community in Encino, CA, served in campus ministry in California and Illinois. In 1987 he received his Doctor of Minis try degree from St. Mary's Seminary/University in Baltimore, Maryland. He currently serves as pastor of St. Albert Church in Houston, Texas.
