Troubled friendships, ethnic diversity and a father struggling with unemployment are all part of this story in which family values are clearly demonstrated. Franny suffers a multitude of emotions as she experiences the joys and trials of adolescence. Much of the reading has a quiet quality that is soothing to listen to. The use of Irish brogue and Spanish accent for the various characters enahances the narration. The words of the grumpy shop owner are read with obvious relish for the part of the villian, who turns out to be a kind person in the end. The entire tone of the story and the narration is comforting and will appeal to children ages 9-12. C.A.K. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine
