When Jefferson Davis & his cabinet fled Richmond during the closing days of the Confederacy, they sought to avoid capture & continue the war. Of course it was in vain. Davis & his family were captured. The Union warders treated him shabbily. The South saw him as a hero, a martyr for the Lost Cause. THE LONG SURRENDER contrasts two of history's most significant figures, Jefferson Davis & Robert E. Lee, & shows how profoundly their contrasting views of the New South affected modern American attitudes.

This popular history has a "you-are-there" quality, which makes for good listening. It concentrates on the post-Civil War tribulations of President of the Confederacy Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and a number of others, including Virginia Clay, Judah P. Benjamin and Davis's long-suffering wife. Ken Parker's narration is both crisp and kind. His mature voice sounds much like that of Norman Dietz, but he reads more rapidly, an asset here. There are no sound effects or other enhancements, just comfortable reading. This is a fine book, appropriately presented. D.W. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine
