Synopsis

The third volume in the East Hampton Historical Collection brings together in one book, with a common detailed index, all of the important early histories that were published about East Hampton during the nearly hundred-year period between 1798 and 1896. These thirteen histories, presented in chronological order, are not widely known or available to the general public. Not history books as we know them today, they are in the form of sermons, travel logs, short articles, documents, excerpts and essays, some by such notables as Walt Whitman, William Cullen Bryant, Silas Wood, and Lyman Beecher. In his introduction, Twomey stresses their value as "a snapshot of the culture and times in which the history was written" which gives us a new perspective on the early days of East Hampton Town and its impact on New York State and the nation.
