Simpson, Louis

9781557781567: Collected Poems

From Library Journal

This collection includes only the poems Simpson wanted to include. By his account, Simpson "can hardly enjoy a poem that is all idea"a confession that immediately separates his work from that of many contemporaries. His poetry sticks to the ordinary, if not the banal, and is blissfully ignorant of post-modernist styles. As a result, it often comes across as writers' workshop exercises, as carefully disordered prose on the page. Particularly now in the late 1980s, when experimental schools such as the Language group command critical attention, his poetry can seem old-fashioned. It might best be considered as a model of academic poetry today. Ivan Arguelles, Univ. of California at Berkeley Lib.
