Dr. James J. Asher, an industrial psychologist, served on the faculty of San Jose State University in San Jose, California for almost 40 years. He was honored as Outstanding Professor for his talent in making complex math concepts understandable to students terrified of mathematics. His breakthrough research in stress-free learning of multiple languages, the Total Physical Response, is known worldwide to language educators as TPR. From years of investigating how the human brain works in learning, he concluded that every student can understand, in the very first exposure, any complex mathematical or scientific concept, if the instructor throws the ball so that the student can catch it. And when students catch the ball on the first pitch, they have the optimal chance for long-term retention. The secret is pitching the instructional ball to the right side of the brain.
