The proper working of ritual is at the heart of the Western magical tradition. In this book, an eminent contemporary octist and a former member of the Hermetic Society of the Golden Dawn, shows exactly how ceremonial techniques can be used to concentrate and harness the enormous psychic and spiritual potential of human consciousness.Dr. Regardie s detailed ysis and description of key rituals are based on his own considerable experience and his knowledge of Golden Dawn techniques. In addition to providing practical instructions on robes, ritual equipment and decor, he also links current oct practice to broader historical precedents. The daily reition of ritual brings about an enormous increase in psycho-spiritual sensitivity and provides essential preparation for the final act of initiation that state of spiritual enlightenment that is the goal of the true octist.

Francis Israel Regardie was born in 1907 to an Orthodox Jewish family in the East End of London. He served in the Army during World War II, and afterward moved to Los Angeles to open a chiropractic clinic and also work as a Reichian therapist. He had studied psychology and psychiatry with several notable teachers and was a strong proponent of Jungian analysis all his life, as well as the more controversial work of Wilhelm Reich. Both writers are known among the 20th century's most unique and controversial psychological theorists, whose writings straddled the border between science, religion and myth, and incorporated a strong element of sexuality. It is easy to see how this emphasis blended well with Regardie's magical and esoteric studies.
