"Before they were fully organized, Captain George Wythe Randolph's Howitzers were called out in November 1859, during the John Brown crisis, for their first stint of active service. In the following year, the Howitzers, designated as Company H in Richmond's 1st Regiment Virginia Volunteers, acquired regimental uniforms with artillery trim, and six Dahlgren naval boat howitzers.
