Ronald Hayman's full~scale biography penetrates to the human being at the center of the myth and illuminates de Sade in an eighteenth~century milieu of violence, repression, revolution, and intellectual liberation. An aristocrat of pre~Revolutionary France, de Sade was born to a life of wealth and arrogance in which the needs and rights of the underpnvlleged majority~women as a class were included in this group~counted for nothing. He found himself in trouble when still a young man, partly because of his sexual practices although these were not uncommon among rich and idle noblemen. De Sade realized that to indulge his appetite for pleasure was to collide not only with church, state, and society, but also with the willpower of the individuals he desired. But, he suggested, in nature love and cruelty are inextricable. To express this conviction, de Sade ricocheted into a cult of evil ~ and perhaps beyond, into insanity, using abjection as a means for forging a system of values. Reprisal came at the hands of his mother~in~law, who requested that the king issue a lettre de cachet for de Sade's arrest. Such imprisonment was beyond repeal; de Sade was to spend some twenty~five years in prison, with nothing to do except fantasize, think, and write. In 1789 the ancien regime was overturned by the Revolution. Freed from prison, de Sade worked for the new Republic~one of his jobs was to report on conditions in hospitals and in positions of political power he revealed himself capable of exceptionally humane behavior. But in 1801 he was arrested again because of what was considered to be the subversive depiction of sexual details in his novels. His imprisonment continued until he died at the age of74. Ronald Hayman's account of de Sade's life and its historical background is complemented by his assessment of a man whose abilities as a writer and philosopher flowered in the forcing~house of prison. Incorporating much new material about the life, and examining afresh the writings of the marquis, Hayman seeks to understand this solitary moral rebel and to demonstrate how confinement made a man of action into a writer and thinker of great originality.
