Synopsis
Renowned for his pioneering mixture of both Spanish and English in poetry and prose, Victor Hernández Cruz has now incorporated Arabic language and North African culture into his unique poetic idiom. As Cruz builds poetic bridges between Arab-influenced Spain, Spanish-influenced North Africa, African--influenced Puerto Rico, and an electrified Latino New York, he uncovers the confluence between their various geographies, histories, languages, and mythologies.

À propos de l'auteur
Cruz is a two-time World Heavyweight Champion poet featured in Bill Moyers' "Language of Life" series whose most recent collection, Maraca, was a finalist for the Lenore Marshall and Griffin Poetry Prizes. Five-years-old when he moved with his family from Puerto Rico to New York, Cruz now divides his time between Morocco, Puerto Rico, and the US.

In 1981, Life magazine named him one of America's greatest poets. During his high school years he wrote various poems, including "Snaps". In 1969, Random House published his collection "Snaps" and the following year his poetry began to appear in various publications including Evergreen Review and the New York Review of Books. In 1970, Hernández Cruz worked with New York's "Poetry-in-the-school" program. He moved to San Francisco in 1973 and served as a visiting poet in various colleges. From 1973 to 1975, he read and performed his works as a traveling troubadour, covering much of the United States. Hernández Cruz received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. In 1981, the April issue of Life magazine proclaimed Hernández Cruz a National Treasure when they included his name among the greatest American poets.
