Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) peintre majeur de la fin du XIXe siècle, fonda la Sécession viennoise. Ce mouvement exprima toute son opposition à l'art officiel, marqué par l'immobilisme et le refus d'une certaine vision du Modernisme. L'inspiration de Klimt s'inscrit dans la déliquescence lente mais inexorable de l'Empire austro-hongrois, et la multitude des cultures qui la composent. Artiste de l'érotisme et de la sensualité, Klimt est un maître de l'expressionnisme avec Kokoschka et Schiele.
