R.E. Peppy Blount was a public figure in Texas after he returned from the South Pacific as a veteran of World War II. Captain Blount was highly decorated with honors. At 19, he was the youngest pilot of a B-25 bomber strafer in the South Pacific during World War II and during his military career earned more than 15 military decorations including the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with three clusters, two Presidential Unit Citations and six major Battle Stars. An outstanding athlete, he played end for the University of Texas Longhorns on their 1946 Cotton Bowl, 1948 Sugar Bowl, and 1949 Orange Bowl championship teams. He went on to serve as a football official for the Southwest Conference and American Football League.Blount was the youngest member ever elected to the Texas House of Representatives. Blount served three terms before becoming judge of Gregg County in East Texas. Always abreast of community affairs, he was active in the work of area Chambers of Commerce, the Salvation Army, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, and Red Cross. Awarded the DAR Medal of Honor and inducted into the CAF Combat Airman's Hall of Fame in 1999, Peppy emceed the East Texas segment of the Jerry Lewis Telethon for over thirty years helping raise six million dollars for MD research. The author made his home with his wife in Longview, Texas, where he was a practicing attorney, independent oilman and rancher. The Blounts raised three sons, Ralph Finch, John Eugene, and Stephen Howard Blount. Blount passed away in 2010 at the age of eighty-five.
