Le narrateur, un Italien émigré en Argentine par amour, rentre au pays. En Argentine, sa femme a payé de sa vie leur combat contre la dictature militaire. Lui, le rescapé, a appris que la vie d'un homme durait autant que celle de trois chevaux. Il a déjà enterré le premier, en quittant l'Argentine. Il travaille comme jardinier et mène une vie solitaire lorsqu'il rencontre Làila dont il tombe amoureux. Il prend alors conscience que sa deuxième vie touche aussi à sa fin, et que le temps des adieux est révolu pour lui.
