Synopsis

The 100+ page study presents data from 44 college and university learning commons with data broken out by size and type of college, college tuition level and other variables for easier benchmarking. The report helps its readers to answer questions such as: How much have colleges spent to develop learning commons? Which learning commons are most respected and serve as models for other colleges? How common are learning commons outside of academic libraries and which types of college have non-library commons? How many commons have outdoor spaces and how important are these spaces? What percentage of commons floor space is accounted for by group work rooms? What are plans for 3D printing in the commons? How do colleges evaluate their commons? Which departments of the college contribute to the commons budget? What percentage of commons offer tutoring, career advising, writing help, video centers and other services? What kinds of services are students most interested in adding to the commons? How important is the commons in student retention? What percentage of colleges feature a stop at the commons on their college tours for prospective new students? Some of the study’s many findings are that: • More than 45% of colleges in the sample with more than 10,000 enrolled students included some form of outdoor space in the learning commons. • The mean number of group work rooms offered through the commons’ sampled was 6.8 with a median of 5.0. • The smaller the college in terms of total enrollment, the more likely was a college to supply tutors in the learning commons. 54.55% of colleges with fewer than 2,000 students provided tutors in the commons but only 27.27% of colleges with more than 10,000 students did the same. • 27.27% of colleges sampled used outside grants to help finance the commons. • Colleges charging more than $25,000 per year in annual tuition were significantly more likely than others to include lockers or other storage space in their commons and 54.55% of these colleges did so.
