Joel A. Egertson is senior advisor to the director of the Medications Development Division at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). He has served in numerous positions in the criminal justice, and alcohol and drug fields. He was a probation officer at Hennepin County Court Services, director of the methadone treatment program at Mount Sinai Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota, executive director of the Minnesota State Alcohol and Drug Abuse Authority, manager of field services at the National Center for Alcohol Education (University Research Corporation), a deputy division director at The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, and chief of the legislative branch at NIDA before assuming his present position.
Daniel M. Fox is president of the Milbank Memorial Fund. His most recent book, Power and Illness: The Failure of American Health Policy (1993), was released in paperback in 1995.
Alan I. Leshner is director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, a component of the National Institutes of Health charged with leading the nation′s efforts to bring the power of science to bear on drug abuse and addiction. Dr. Leshner received his PhD in physiological psychology from Rutgers University, was a professor of psychology at Bucknell University, held a variety of senior level positions at the National Science Foundation, and served as deputy director and acting director of the National Institute of Mental Health. He has been elected a fellow of many professional societies, and has received numerous awards from both professional and lay groups for his national leadership in science, mental illness and mental health, and substance abuse and addiction.
