Synopsis

“Smelling the roses” is exactly how Elly Vasak has lived her life. She thoroughly enjoys, and expresses through her poems, the beauties of nature and the experience of “simply being human” each day. Descending from a family of weavers from Wales, Elly has followed the Welsh tradition of writing poems about every conceivable topic throughout her life: by noticing the little things people do and say, the wise or funny tidbits of conversation, the “twists and turns” in daily life that we all experience, and by responding to timely topics in the news, holidays or season. Here, in her third collection of poetry, Smell the Roses, Elly has woven a tapestry of delightful poems written between 2000 to 2013. Often, she says, one thought would be the spark or key to a new insight, and maybe a new poem. As a friend commented, “Select any subject matter and within an hour Elly Vasak can create a beautiful poem! Such creative imagination...!” As a member of “the greatest generation,” Elly wrote these poems for a particular group of readers—retired people, couples and singles—(who might catch a few extra innuendos and) who perhaps have a little bit of extra time to enjoy these soulful, touching, romantic, and sometimes witty poems.

À propos de l'auteur

Eleanor Evans Grove was born on November 6, 1920 in Berwyn, Illinois. She graduated from Morton Junior College, where she had been an honor student and homecoming queen. Her husband claims she is as beautiful and charming as she was during her college reign. Next she enrolled in the Nursing/BS program at Northwestern University. She expanded her horizons by taking science and art courses at the University of California in Berkeley and at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, CA. For several years she was an art docent at the Oakland Museum. Eleanor is known to her friends as “Elly.” She married Otto Vasak on the day he graduated from Aviation Cadet School on December 13, 1941. They raised a family of four children and now have ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren to whom they devote a lot of their time and love. Elly and Otto became world travelers through their assignments with the Air Force, with Chevron Chemical, and following retirement. Elly is a prolific writer and wrote poetry and prose before marriage and after the children left the nest. She continues to write poetry with ease and makes monthly contributions to the “Elysian Fields,” which is published by Paradise Valley Estates, a retirement community where they live.
