In Criminological Theories, the noted criminologist Ronald Akers provides thorough description, discussion, and appraisal of the leading theories of crime/delinquent behavior and law/criminal justice - the origin and history of each theory and its contemporary developments and adherents.
Akers offers a clear explanation of each theory (the central concepts and hypotheses of each theory as well as critical criteria for evaluating each theory in terms of its empirical validity). Researchers and librarians, as well as general readers, will find this book a very useful tool and will applaud its clear and understandable exposition of abstract concepts.Les informations fournies dans la section « Synopsis » peuvent faire référence à une autre édition de ce titre.

Hard Back. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : No Dust Jacket. Second Edition. 259 Pages Indexed. Laminated boards. No defets noted. The author provides thorough description, discussion, and appraisal of the leading theories of crime/delinquent behavior and law/criminal justice - the origin and history of each theory and its contemporary developments and adherents he offers a clear explanation of each theory, the central concepts and hypotheses of each theory as well as critical criteria for evaluating each theory in terms of its empirical validity. The purposes of this book are to review the basic concepts and principles of criminological theories and to evaluate their adequacy as explanations of criminal and deviant behavior or of the criminal law and justice system. The first goal in presenting each theory is to give a concise and clear exposition of its central concepts, assertions, and hypotheses. The intent is to provide an accurate, understandable introduction for readers who are not familiar with the theory and a review for those who are. In each case, an effort has been made not only to present the classic or original statements of a theory but to show modifications and revisions of it, including the most recent and significant developments. The second goal is to evaluate the theory and review the main criteria by which the merits of a theory can be judged-logical consistency, scope, parsimony, applicability to policy, testability, and empirical validity. The central focus of the evaluation of each theory is the empirical validity of the theory. The author reviews the research relevant to the theory and assess how well the findings support or contradict the main assertions of the theory. Before the empirical adequacy of a theory can be evaluated, of course, it must be testable, and a considerable amount of attention is given to questions of tautology and measurement. The last chapter is devoted to the topic of theoretical rivalry and integration. Recent examples of conceptual and propositional integration are reviewed and evaluated. This Second Edition contains several significant changes from the First Edition. The chapter sequence and structure have been changed. The distinction between theories that explain the making and enforcing of law and theories that explain criminal and delinquent behavior has been retained, but the Second Edition is not divided, as was the First Edition, into two parts to reflect this distinction. Contents in Eleven Chapters: Introduction to Criminological Theory, Deterrence and Rational Choice Theories, Biological and Psychological Theories, Social Learning Theory, Social Bonding and Control Theories, Labeling Theory, Social Disorganization Anomie and Strain Theories, Conflict Theory, Marxist and Critical Theories, Feminist Theories, and Integrating Criminological Theories.
